Internal Parasite Control in Cats

Video Brief: Feline Parasites

This is an overview of our recommendations concerning internal parasite control in cats in San Diego County.

Other than tapeworms, internal parasites are uncommon in adult cats in Southern California, but because some of them can cause serious disease in cats and in humans, we feel that it is important to address them.

General Recommendations:

For all cats and kittens, we generally recommend:

  • Fecal parasite examinations (laboratory tests on feces) every six to twelve months.
  • Monthly dewormings.

Human risk factors:

Parasite control is especially important if humans are at increased risk. This would include:

  • Cats who go outside and may use vegetable gardens and children’s sandboxes as their litter box.
  • Cats who live with small children or pregnant women.
  • Cats who are exposed to humans with a weakened immune system.
